Memoir of Pierre Toussaint, Born a Slave in St. Domingo

Now Venerable, Pierre Touissant was born a slave in Haiti in 1766 and moved to New York City with the family of his owner at the time of the French Revolution. Not long after his master died, Pierre secretly supported the impoverished family for twenty years with his earnings as a hairdresser, all the while serving the family as a slave.

A touching example of Catholic charity.
