It is believed that Saint Francis of Assisi started the "Way of the Cross" devotion so that those who could not go to the Holy Land would still be able to honor the events of Holy Week. He encouraged people to erect fourteen scenes depicting Christ's Way of the Cross along the route of a long pilgrimage and gave them prayers to say at each "station.
